A rape brought them together.
Mary's sister, Christy, was brutally raped; Mason's brother, Ted, was accused of the crime. Mary left the convent to support Christy during this ordeal; Mason served as Ted's defense attorney. Despite being on opposite sides, there was an attraction that threatened to bubble over. Here's an example.
I'm pretty sure that this scene jumpstarted puberty for me. Best eyefcuk ever!!!
Eventually, Ted was vindicated and Mary ended up leaving the convent. She worked as a nurse for CC - I think he had another one of his strokes or something - and all of a sudden, Mason started coming to the house a little more often. I seem to recall that he was sleeping with Gina, or just stop sleeping with her, or he was caught sleeping with her, and CC spent a lot of time indoctrinating Mary with that fact. So Mary went back and forth about the possibility of Mason; meanwhile, Mason remained very intrigued and smitten by Mary.
Then, along the way, Mary committed the cardinal soap opera sin - marrying some dude that she didn't love in order to discourage/disappoint/hurt the real one. And per usual, Mary came to her senses, but not before getting raped by hubby Mark and getting pregnant. But before the $h*t hit the fan, she did get a marriage proposal out of Mason.
Of course, the C sign came down on her, but not before viewers had the chance to see Mason's softer side and the way he could really love a woman. It took a lot for Mason to reveal that side of himself and after he lost Mary, it took an even greater force to reignite that fire in him.
