One of reasons why I loved Santa Barbara was because it was probably the first soap opera that allowed me, as a viewer, to make my own decisions about the characters. Too often, soap writers stop short of making a character wear all black and twirl oily mustaches to convey evil nogoodness.
Santa Barbara had its share of evil to the core characters; but in my mind, Gina Demott Capwell Timmons was not one of them. Sure, in Linda Gibboney's hands, Gina can across as whiny and a bit frenzied, but at Gina's core, she was a mother caught up in Capwell bull$h*t that, for once, she wasn't a party to. CC decided that it was best to give Channing and Santana's son, Brandon, to the Demotts - then the tool had the nerve to expect that Gina would give Brandon back. Sorry, son... of a b*tch, but there are no takesy backsys when it comes to this particular adoption. This particular clip was probably the beginning of when I was on Gina's side. An early example of how bitchy and entitled Eden could be, she spilled the beans about Brandon's paternity to a stunned Gina. This was absolutely unnecessary, but this confrontation was the beginning of Gina's sometimes just war against various members of the Capwell family.
Gibboney's Gina was all kinds of shady; however, when Robin Mattson stepped into the role, she took Gina to another level altogether. This clip was my all-time favorite Gina moment. The Capwells decided to kick Gina out of the house - actually, they were really high hat about it, considering how some of them were just as shady as Gina. This clip is in Russian, I think, but you get what is happening.
Along with the balls, Robin Mattson brought humor into the character of Gina. Gina was a very wounded person, deep down, because of the Capwell machinations and yet, she desperately campaigned for their respect and even love. It was a bizarre fixation she had, but Mattson made it somewhat understandable. Here's another video illustrating Gina's desperation when it comes to getting something she thinks she wants.
Because, frankly, CC wasn't worth it.
