As award shows go, last night's Critics Choice Movie Awards was pretty dismal, starting with the red carpet. Nancy O'Dell was fine as a red carpet correspondent, but the other dude... man. He didn't know when to shut up and he couldn't hide his disinterest in his interviewees. I remember him from the recent MTV VMAs... I don't remember him being this bad.
Anyway, Kristin Chenowith hosted last night's festivities and I have to say, I wasn't entirely impressed. I think it was the material. And because the material was so bad, Chenowith had to try even harder to sell it, but it just amplified how truly bad the material was. Or maybe it was Chenowith herself. I think that VH1 tapped her based on her overly emotional, yet hilarious Emmys acceptance speech, which was absolutely charming and endearing. Still, it didn't translate to being an effective host for this event. Plus, the people in the control room didn't know how to shoot the show effectively. It was a choppy hot mess, much like the VMAs. Mind you, this year's crop of nominees didn't seem too exciting or outside of the box. And no Brad and Angelina.
Still, I was happy to see Inglourious Basterds receive some hardware, especially the ensemble and supporting actor awards. With each viewing, the movie becomes more and more fun to watch and it seems to go by a lot faster. And initially, I thought the movie was top-heavy with subtitles-I've reversed my thinking on that. At any rate, I hope that the Critics Choice is an accurate indication on how awards season will go, although Sandra Bullock tying with Meryl Streep? Come on!
And finally... an appropriate tribute to John Hughes.
