Gotta say... I wasn't too attentive of last night's Golden Globe Awards.
I watched it, but not closely. And I most certainly didn't watch TV Guide Network and E!'s red carpet coverage... very closely. For some reason, I was just not in the mood to get annoyed and yet, I managed to get there by merely passing by my TV set. First, that Carrie Anne chick on the TV Guide network, talking to Joshua Jackson. His woman, Diane Kruger, was Bridget von Hammersmark in Inglourious Basterds; Joshua, on the other hand, didn't make an appearance in the flick, and yet, Carrie Anne asked him what it was like to work with Quentin Tarantino?
Good lord.
And E continues its streak of making @$$hats out of themselves, but this time, it was puppethead Dipandi. The b*tch had Anna Kendricks from Up in the Air on her little platform; essentially, Dipandi hoped that Kendricks would serve as chum to attract her costar, George Clooney, to the platform. She damn near knocked over Kendricks, trying to get both George and Elisabetta's attention, even reverting to yelling in Italian, as a way to 'attract' them. Only bent people would be attracted to that level of stalking.
Seriously, when will these entertainment outlets tutor their red carpet personnel? It's really beginning to get embarrassing.
As for the telecast itself, it was a'ight. Ricky Gervais was okay... actually, I think he was a little better than okay; unfortunately, the audience seemed ice cold, which was a shame. Like Kristen Chenowith, I think he was tapped because of his turns as presenter at the Emmys. The ongoing thing between he and Steve Carell offered some of the funniest moments of recent Emmy memory, and so the GGs thought they could mine it. Unfortunately, I think that they underestimated the fact that he is still an outsider - an outsider much like Chris Rock, David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Whoopie, and Rosie. Translation: Ricky doesn't play nice or gentle, although he was significantly more gentle than the aforementioned. Still... he took a crack at Angelina - adoption joke. But what was surprising was that he took shots at seemingly sacred cows.
Like Sir Paul McCartney - making a crack about how he and Sir Paul were on the same flight but Sir Paul was seated in coach due to a significant cash loss last year (read: his divorce from Heather Mills)
But my favorite slam was about - you guessed it - Jennifer Aniston. Gervais was talking about how unimportant writers were and that it was the actors who made all of the difference, due to their ability to be chameleons in every role, and with that, he said something like
'And now... Rachel from Friends and that bloke from 300'.
Ouch! And needless to say, neither of them were amused. It made my night, though.
And another moment I derived ghoulish delight from was when Cher presented an award with Christina Aguillera.
Really, Cher? Presenting with someone? Really?
Because there was a time when Cher was like Jack Nicholson; greatly anticipated and often, a solo presenter. What happened?
Actually, what does Sir Paul, Gerard Butler, and Cher have in common? They took cheap shots at MJ when he was low. Could this be the MJ curse rearing its head again?
Actually, it's not really a curse; it's just that the universe knows when a person is being deceptive, cheap and self-serving instead of genuine or honest. All three of these people demonstrated this at the most inopportune times and ways.
So suck it... although they're mere crumbs; but every little bit helps.
